Field Trip: Hydroponic Garden Centers

October 25, 2010

Storefront: Long Island Expressway's finest?

Josh and I headed over to Hydroponic Garden Centers over our anniversary weekend (we bought beer making equipment there as our anniversary gift to each other this year- a quality investment in marital bliss).  If you are in area, I highly recommend making a stop there.  They have a strange collection of stuff, all of which I am interested in.  Organic gardening supplies (seeds, fertilizers), beer and wine making supplies (kits, grains, yeasts, hops), and canning supplies (jars, lids, pectin, starter kits).  I can (and have) spent a lot of time in there!

A (blurry...oops) collection of jars

During this trip, we got the supplies to make 6 gallons of stout (currently brewing- I will be posting on this soon).  I also picked up some wine pH strips.  A.) I love science, and lithmus paper is a fav and B.) The pH range for wine testing is 2.6 to 4.6.  Guess what that range also covers?  Safe pH for canned goods!  I am hoping to test out some recipes, and use the pH strips to test their acidity to ensure that they are safe.  Ah yes, the power of science…

Science!
